Multi-car collision temporarily closes Bypass

December 2, 2008

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -  Officer Lynn Davis pulled his Dougherty County Police cruiser into the median around 10:00AM.

The Toyota Camry directly behind him, slowed down, but the Yukon following that Camry couldn't stop in time and lost control, first hitting a car in the outside lane of northbound traffic, then hitting that Camry and Officer Davis, knocking his car into the Southbound lanes.

Two other drivers who witnessed that wrecked were pulling over to see if they could help the people involved.

That's when this dump truck hit both a PT Cruiser and a Mitchell Transit van taking patients to appointments.

Eugene Jones saw entire thing in his rear view mirror.

"I saw this vehicle here, this black vehicle here, out of control," said Jones. "That's what I saw. He hit the first car and that car swerved almost in a circle. Then he hit another car and that's when he got out of control, really out of control. Real bad and then he hit the police car in the side, bent his door in. That's what I saw."

The driver of the Yukon, Wendy Childs, was taken to the hospital to be checked out, but is expected to be okay. She has been charged with failure to maintain lane.

Simon Wade, who was driving the dump truck will be charged with following too closely.
