Multi-car collision temporarily closes Bypass

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -  Officer Lynn Davis pulled his Dougherty County Police cruiser into the median around 10:00AM.

The Toyota Camry directly behind him, slowed down, but the Yukon following that Camry couldn't stop in time and lost control, first hitting a car in the outside lane of northbound traffic, then hitting that Camry and Officer Davis, knocking his car into the Southbound lanes.

Two other drivers who witnessed that wrecked were pulling over to see if they could help the people involved.

That's when this dump truck hit both a PT Cruiser and a Mitchell Transit van taking patients to appointments.

Eugene Jones saw entire thing in his rear view mirror.

"I saw this vehicle here, this black vehicle here, out of control," said Jones. "That's what I saw. He hit the first car and that car swerved almost in a circle. Then he hit another car and that's when he got out of control, really out of control. Real bad and then he hit the police car in the side, bent his door in. That's what I saw."

The driver of the Yukon, Wendy Childs, was taken to the hospital to be checked out, but is expected to be okay. She has been charged with failure to maintain lane.

Simon Wade, who was driving the dump truck will be charged with following too closely.

    Monday went quickly for jurors in this case.  The judge dismissed them around noon, after one of the eye-witnesses who is behind bars refused to go to the trial.

    Preliminary investigations revealed the female victim fell from a billboard while conducting routine maintenance, and suffered fatal injury, according to Lowndes County Coroner Austin J. Fiveash.

    Health officials are urging you to be careful around wildlife and stray animals, after a South Georgia family was attacked by a fox with rabies. This happened last Thursday on Cotton Avenue in Lake Park. A man and his dog were attacked by the fox when they went outside their house. Lowndes County animal service employees said the fox's test came back positive for Rabies. "Once someone really becomes infected with the rabies virus and it develops into the disease.
