ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Five Georgians a day die of complications from diabetes; some don't even know they have the disease. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the state. Phoebe Putney hospital wants to change that.

Friday, the hospital offered free blood sugar screenings to the public because about a third of the people with diabetes don't even know they have the deadly disease.

"We've had a few that did not know they had any problem with their blood sugar, little elevations and so we will contact their physicians and kind of let them know if it's a little elevated so they can get checked on and maybe referred to us for some teaching," said Phyllis Vititoe.

November is national diabetes awareness month. Phoebe performed more than 300 free blood sugar screenings Friday.
