Quitman - Renovation plans are in the works for a South Georgia courthouse. Brooks County has been selected from more than 40 applicants to receive a $20,000 grant to upgrade their courthouse.
The money comes from the Georgia Heritage Grant Fund, a program that encourages counties to preserve the state's heritage.
County officials say the money will be used to install an elevator in the courthouse. "We currently have to use the stairs to get to and from the bottom floor to the actual courtroom, so an elevator will make it a lot more convenient," said Glenda Cofield, County Administrator.
The Brooks County courthouse was built in 1864, and last remodeled in 1892. Installation of the elevator should begin early next year.
