Former Monroe star up for NFL rookie honors

September 10, 2002

Former Monroe High standout Deion Branch's performance in New England's win over Pittsburgh on Monday Night Football has made him one of five finalists for the N.F.L.'s rookie of the week award.

Branch caught six passes for 83 yards including his first touchdown reception of his pro career in Monday's 30-14 win over the Steelers.

The Patriots second round draft pick out of Louisville also made a key block on a 40-yard touchdown reception by Donald Hayes.

The other four finalists for the first NFL rookie of the week award this season are Miami tight end Randy McMichael from Fort Valley and the University of Georgia, Houston QB David Carr, Tennessee LB Carlos Hall and Oakland LB Napoleon Harris.

The winner will be chosen by balloting on and will be announced on Thursday.
