VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - The outgoing Lowndes County Sheriff is now the incoming Lowndes County Commission Chairman.

Ashley Paulk has defeated former county commissioner Norman Bennett.

Paulk had 23,158 votes.  Bennett had 13,357.

Paulk says he has big ideas for his new job, including employee pay raises and a better relationship between the city and county.

He says the tough economy doesn't bother him.

He's ready for the challenge.

"I'm stepping in to one of the worst year that the county has faced in a long time but I think I can handle it. I'm looking forward to it and I have good people to work with," Paulk says.

"Paulk and I are friends. We are going to remain friends and we've still interested in serving the county. I will help where ever I can," Bennett adds.

Paulk did not run for re-election as Sheriff after 16-years in that office.
