VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - In Lowndes County, the board of elections hopes to beat the state's 90% voter turnout prediction.

They shattered the state's turnout average for early voting and turnout Tuesday has them on track to meet their expectations.

They say a 43% turnout for early voting here in Lowndes County. The state average was 35%.

As of 3:00 P.M., the board of elections reported a 66% voter turnout so far. But we still have several busy hours to go.

Almost every precinct reported a line before they opened their doors Tuesday morning. At our larger precincts, those lines haven't gotten any shorter throughout the day.

The county has fifty thousand active voters and poll workers do expect a 90% turnout or better.

But there's also ten thousand inactive voters.

The board supervisor tell us those voters are coming out of the woodwork, meaning the number of provisional ballots has increased.

"We'll generally have 15-20 in early voting, we got over 200. We expect to see the same percentage out in the polling place simply because of the greater interest in the election," says Election Supervisor Deb Cox.

Allstate has just released to us some troubling statistics. They say Americans are 18 percent more likely to suffer a traffic fatality on Election Day than any other Tuesday of the year.

We want to remind everyone to slow down and be patient when voting and heading to the polls.

And poll workers say as long as you are in line at your precinct by 7:00 P.M., you will be allowed to vote.
