Peanut tour around South Georgia

September 4, 2002

A peanut tour brings visitors from all over the world to Southwest Georgia.

More than 200 people spent all day learning about peanuts. One stop was here at Lewis M. Carter Manufacturing Plant in Donalsonville. The plant builds equipment for shelling peanuts.

Mixed in with Georgia visitors were people from China, Philippines and Thailand. Agricultural Engineer Chris Butts says, "We're the top producers of peanuts in the world. They want to see how we produce peanuts and looking for potential opportunities for exporting their crop, but also importing some of our peanuts."

The 16th Annual Peanut tour is coordinated by Georgia Peanut Commission, University of Georgia and the USDA Agricultural Research Service.
