ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A fake call for help allowed a Coffee County man to ambush deputies this morning along Old River Road.
This is what their patrol car looked after the attack. Fifty-eight year old Gene Morton hid behind a propane tank at the side of his home and then shot through the driver's side window of the patrol car with a shotgun.
When the rifle jammed, deputies were able to arrest Morton. He's charged with aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer. Today Sheriff Jerry Pope said this proves that there's no such thing as a routine call in the world of law enforcement.
