ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The city of Albany must enact an ordinance to prevent identity theft from happening at Water, gas and light. The commission tentatively voted Tuesday to adopt the ordinance, which is required by the Federal Trade Commission. The requirement is specific to creditors, like utilities.
They must have a program in place to flag any type of identity theft or fraudulent activity. Attorney Nathan Davis said, "They want to make sure that your personal information, especially your social security number is kept in a very limited manner, as far as limited disbursement."
Red flags may come from consumer reporting agencies or fraud detection agencies. Only authorized personnel will have access to customer accounts.
