Margaret Vickers Burgess, 97. of Albany died Thursday, October 16, 2008 following an illness.
Her funeral services will be 11 AM Monday, October 20, 2008 at Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church with the interment to follow in Crown Hill Cemetery. Rev. Nancy Scarbrough and Dr. Andy Goode will officiate. The family will receive friends 5 PM to 7 PM Sunday, October 19, 2008 at Kimbrell-Stern.
She was a native of Ashland AL, and the baby of twelve children. Mrs. Burgess lived in Albany for a great number of years. She was a member of Porterfield Memorial United Methodist Church since 1963, a member of the Fellowship Sunday School class and the United Methodist Womens Circle # 6.
She and her late husband Mr. Otis Burgess helped start the Albany Association for Retarded Citizens, now known as Albany Advocacy Resourse Center (ARC) in 1963, and they helped establish the residential programs for the clients of ARC, which are considered a model for the state.
The lights of her life were her son Alan and assisting other citizens with disabilities. She was preceded in death by her husband, Otis M. Burgess, and her son Alan Burgess.
She is survived by great number of nieces and nephews and a host of close friends and acquaintances.
