For the eighth straight year the Valdosta State Blazers were on the winning end in their inaugural season opener against Albany State. The Blazers shut out the Golden Rams 26-0 in front of a packed house at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany.
Valdosta State sophomore quarterback Buster Faulkner hooked up with wide receiver CJ Lofton for two touchdowns, the longest a 21 yard strike, to give the Blazers their first win of the 2002 season.
Albany State had scoring opportunities early but could not cash in when Micaiah Lucas' 40 yard field goal attempt in the first quarter sailed wide left.
Faulkner did not enter the game until 8:48 remaining in the first half and immediately sparked the VSU offense, leading them to a field goal in his first series under center. True freshman Barrett Wilkes started the game for the Blazers, but failed to put the ball in the end zone.
With the win Valdosta State moves to a perfect 8-0 over Albany State.
