NORMAN PARK, GA (WALB) - A law enforcement veteran was honored Tuesday night, for bravely capturing a suspected armed robber who tried to shoot him.

Norman Park city leaders gave officer Sam Smith a plaque commending him for his quick action back on August 25th, when a gunman tried to rob a liquor store in Moultrie.

The clerk fought back, and the suspect took off.  Smith spotted the man's truck in Norman Park and chased him.  The gunman ditched his truck, fired shots at Smith and ran off.

Officer Smith fired back, shot the suspect and chased him down.

"It's nice to know that they would take the time to do something to show their appreciation. I guess everybody likes to get their back patted once in a while," said Officer Sam Smith of the Norman Park Police Department.

Smith's been with the Norman Park Police Department for less than a year, but was a Moultrie police officer for more than ten years.
