Murder in Tifton

August 29, 2002

Tifton- "He got shot right there, and just fell down," China Davis explains to friends, family and neighbors gathered at the Dennard family home in Tifton.

"Ran down there, heard last two shots, guy who shot him nearly ran over me, when got there Cory [Dennard] was lying on the ground, told him to breathe."

The man witnesses have told police fired the fatal shots, Lorenzo Johnson, he lived just two doors down from 26-year-old Cory Dennard.

"They were friends, spoke to each other everyday, joked around," Dennard's best friend Rodney Thomas said.

But for some reason the conversation became heated Wednesday night, between the two homes at Adler Road and Ermine Drive.

The medical debris left behind shows where Dennard was killed, the narrow pathway leading back to that window, where Dennard's mother was doing the dishes, and looked out and saw and heard everything.

"When she saw it was Cory, she started screaming," Davis says.

But Dennard was already gone before his mother, EMS, or anyone arrived, except for his Auntie. "When he looked up at me, it was like he was saying, 'Auntie I can't breathe anymore,' he took his last breath and he died," Davis said.

Thursday, everyone in the neighborhood left wondering why it happened.

"Don't take all that just to settle the thing," Thomas said.

Dennard is the father of four children. Tifton police so far are not releasing any information about the murder or their investigation.
