ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A Lee County School Bus carrying a half dozen special education students was rear ended on Highway 19 in Leesburg Thursday.

The crash happened just before noon at the intersection of Highway 19 and Robert B. Lee Drive. The bus was stopped at the traffic light on Highway 19 north, preparing to turn right when a car slammed into it. The driver of the car said his foot slipped off the brake.

Students who were returning from a field trip were not injured.

"They're doing fine actually. The buses are designed for the vehicles to go under them, unfortunately the people in the vehicle have a better chance of being hurt than the children on the bus," said Ricky Canterbury, Lee County Schools Transportation Director.

The driver was also uninjured. Leesburg Police are investigating the crash, and have yet to determine if charges will be filed against the driver.

Students were loaded onto another bus and taken back to school.
