A great way to wrap up the regular season with 28-5 record. I did alot better than in the preseason when I made my picks on who will make the playoffs. The computer system ate that file so I am going on memory.
In 1-AAAAA, I know I went with Lowndes, Northside, Tift and Valdosta and was 3 for 4.
Same is true in 1-AAAA where yours truly picked Lee County (0-10) to make the playoffs. So, I was a year early on the Trojan turnaround but it will come in Leesburg
I was right on the money in 1-AAA with Crisp County but missed Dougherty and of course went with Cairo and Peach.
Also 3-4 in 1-AA with the only miss (and it was a biggie) was Brooks County.
I am not going to go pick playoff games specifically but offer my opinions.
AAAAA: I think all four teams (Lowndes, Northside, Tift Co and Coffee) will sweep though the Blue Devils and Trojans have tough games in Atlanta and the weather forecast on Friday for Coffee is not to favorable.
AAAA: Westside Macon should make it to the semifinals (which are not at the Dome this year). I like Thomas County Central and Bainbridge to also advance. Bearcats though will likely face Griffin in the second round and that is not too good and Thomas County Central may have a date at Marist in two weeks.
AAA: Cairo's road to the Dome is not easy. Troup High is very good and then you may have Carrollton in the quarterfinals and rematch with Carver in the semifinals. On the other side LaGrange and Peach County could meet yet again in the playoffs.
AA: It has been a tough month for Fitzgerald coach Robby Pruitt. His starting quarterback has been sick and the Hurricanes lose two of their last three games to fall into third place. The really bad news is that a coin flip drops Charlton County to second which gives the Canes a first round road trip to Folkston. Fitzgerald has won there under coach Pruitt in the past but this is the playoffs where the Indians are almost unbeatable. Brooks County has a good draw but beware of Lovett the bottom of the bracket. Thomasville has MCA, Dublin and Buford if the Dogs make it that far. Cook High once again could make another deep run. I think the Hornets can knock off the Pirates in Baxley and likely face another trip to Calhoun in three weeks.
A: The region champion that needs to be ready this week is Wilcox County. Patriots crushed Seminole Co. 40-0 in week one. A different tribe of Indians is coming back to Rochelle on a winning streak that included a win over region one champion Miller County. A Wilcox County victory could set up another rematch with Lincoln County. Miller County need to be wary of Savannah Christian in the second round. On the other side, Clinch County gets a rematch with ECI and the Panthers passing attack could give them a chance against the defending state champs. Turner County has had their playoff problems but the Rebels just might make a long run in their bracket. It would be great to see them play Whitefield Academy which won the region five title under former Sherwood Christian head coach Jimmy Fields. Congratulations to a class act in Jimmy Fields who at times had me on the sidelines with camera in hand wanting to go in play after one of his inspirational speeches.
Anyway see you in the Dome in five weeks.
