ALBANY, GA (WALB) -   The high school graduation rate for the state is at its highest level ever, and one Dougherty County school beat that.

Westover High School's graduation rate was 79.4% for last school year, that's 4% above the state average. Counselor Cathie Chandler says dedicated staff, parental involvement and a strong emphasis on extra curricular activities like sports and clubs have a big role in the high rate of achievement.

She said, "When the kids get involved with their sports and clubs, we have a school spirit, so when you are a freshman and enter this school, you see these kids involved, it makes them want to actually walk across the stage and become a Patriot and get their diploma as a Patriot."

The overall graduation rate for the school system was 63.3%. While that is well below the state average, it was up by almost 2 percentage points from the previous year.
