Waves lose it in the 9th

August 24, 2002

Albany, Ga - The Augusta GreenJackets stole a win from the South Georgia Waves, scoring three runs in the ninth inning for a 3-2 win in a South Atlantic League game at Paul Eames Park Saturday night.

Leigh Neuage tossed seven shutout innings, allowing only four hits but the South Georgia (30-31/69-61) bullpen could not hold the lead.

Jose Diaz walked the first two hitters in the ninth before hitting Daniel Figueroa to load the bases.

Thom Ott (3-4) checked in and induced a run-scoring double play in his first pitch, pushing Ryan Brunner to third.

A walk later Matt Cooper singled on a 1-2 pitch from Ott to tie the score.

Juan Salazar next lined a single to left, plating Bryan Kent to give the 'Jackets their third final at-bat win over the Waves on the season.

Augusta (32-30/66-65) has taken three of four in the final series of the season against the Waves and nine of 13 overall.

South Georgia grounded into four double plays in the night to allow Augusta to hang around.

Kevin Huang (6-2) earned the win with three shutout innings in relief for the GreenJackets.

The Waves scored their runs off an RBI grounder by Derek Mann in the third inning and an RBI single by Sean Pierce in the fifth but would not threaten again.

The two teams wrap up their five-game set Sunday at 6:05 p.m. at Paul Eames Park. Edwin Jackson (5-2) will get the call for the Waves opposite Manny Delcarmen (6-8).
