ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Prosecutors say an Albany teenager charged with shooting an Albany Police officer is a gang member who was selling drugs the night of the shooting.

A grand jury just indicted 18-year-old Johnny Hill, Junior for aggravated assault on a police officer, possession of marijuana to distribute, and two counts of street gang participation.

27-year-old Officer Tim Harvey was shot June 17th when he tried to question a suspicious man on a bicycle on 8th Avenue. Harvey just returned to light duty last week. Prosecutors say investigators found several bags of marijuana and believe Hill was selling them.

"That this was in furtherance of the Rattlers street gang, and that is what we have charged in the indictment," says Dougherty Chief Assistant D. A. Greg Edwards.

Hill will most likely go on trial in January. He could be sentenced to 80 years in prison if convicted.
