VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - Valdosta Technical College administrators are working hard to reduce the impact of the merger on both the facility and students.

When, and if, Val Tech merges with East Central in Fitzgerald, they expect the number of layoffs to be minimal.

The possible merger is set for July 2010 and then only if East Central receives a regional accreditation.

Both campuses would remain open, but only one president would oversee both schools.

The merger is part of a statewide plan to save $3.5 million and ease the state's budget crisis that has forced cuts in all state agencies.

They say cuts at the administrative level will assure programs for students aren't affected.
