Long time rivals face rebuilding

August 20, 2002

In the past two years the Westwood Wildcats have won 28 straight games and back to back double-A state titles, but this off-season the team that's so used to winning took a big loss with the graduation of 11 seniors. Westwood head coach Charlie Greene said, "I think it's a challenge for us. We've got to step up and decide if we really want to play or not, and how bad we want to play and how bad we want to go on and maybe do another state championship. It's not out of the possibility, it will be a tough job, but it's not out of the possibility."

Charlie Greene will look to senior quarterback Daniel Morrell to pick up where David Phelps left off. Morrell leads an offense that includes offensive lineman John Johnson, and running back's Taylor Sullivan and Mark Adams. Senior quarterback Daniel Morrell said, "We welcome any challenge that's coming toward us. And we're gonna stand and fight like the champions we are."

Meanwhile, Don Beard is back in charge at Terrell Academy. Terrell Academy head coach Don Beard said, "We need to maintain and continue winning rather than try and win for the first time. And that's a lot easier, to maintain, than it is to win for the first time."

Coach Beard who enters his 32nd year at Terrell Academy is in the same boat as Charlie Greene. The Eagles have just five starters back, but Beard hopes seniors like Judd Schramm can pick up the slack. Senior running back Judd Schramm said, "We want it bad. And in your senior year you want it the most and I'm looking forward to it."

But even though both Westwood and Terrell will have a lot of new players, those players know how to win.
