ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A group that supported the Marine Corps Logistics Base during the last Base Realignment says Dougherty County needs to utilize the base for economic development better.

Speaking before the economic development commission, Joel Wernick, a member of the Southwest Georgia alliance for progress, said waiting to defend the base if there's another base closure process will be too late. The group wants an ongoing search for industries and firms that could support the base, and therefore the community.

He said, "They also are a big part of our local economy and although they have their mission there, there are often times things that can be encouraged to come to our part of the country that support things that they do here."

The alliance also believes collaboration with neighboring counties is essential to workforce development and in recruiting defense industry investors.
