ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A downtown Albany attraction is now closed for renovations. Construction of renovations for the Ray Charles Plaza begun Monday morning and will continue through the end of October.

All the walkways leading to the statue in the middle of the plaza will be blocked off, but visitors will still be able to see the statue. The city refuses to take control of the facility from Albany Tomorrow Incorporated because of those problems, but will after renovations are complete.

"We have to complete laying the sod. And we have to make sure that the mechanics work as they were designed. So that is the reason for the delay. And it is just a temporary closure," said Downtown Manager, Don Buie.

To minimize the construction time, the city is asking for any events planned around the Ray Charles Plaza to be rescheduled.
