ALBANY, GA (WALB) - The Republican Vice Presidential Nominee has inspired women in South Georgia. It's not just her political platform. Sarah Palin's eyeglasses have inspired women to want the same look. Optometrists in Albany say they are seeing customers demanding "the Palin effect."

The Governor of Alaska burst into the national spotlight when she was named John McCain's vice presidential running mate. Her eyeglasses part of her signature look, and women in South Georgia noticed, and want them.

Beverly Johnson said "I thinks she looks very nice in her glasses, and I would consider buying that kind of glasses."

O.D.-Optometrist Ellis Cosby says customers are asking Sarah Palin eyeglasses.  "We've had a couple of calls. I actually had a customer in yesterday that referred to it."

The Hour Glass confirms the frameless style glasses are hot. Assistant Manager Christi Barlow said, "Some of our sales associates say they have seen as many as 7 or 8 this week, come in and ask for the frames."

"She's popular and in the news right now," said Johnson said. "And people usually see what people in the news are wearing and looking like, and follow suit."

"Absolutely. It's like the Jennifer Anniston haircut. Everybody's got to have one," Barlow said.

But Cosby thinks it's more than just a fashion trend. He say one of his customer's is glad it's now OK for women to wear glasses.  "The fact you had a very attractive political figure that is not afraid to wear glasses. She looks very confident in them, very comfortable in them. And that's what appeals to her."

These polls in South Georgia show Governor Palin has grabbed women's attention with her eyeglasses style, and they are jumping on the bandwagon.   "I think so. I think she started a trend that's gonna stay with us for a while," Barlow said.

Every eyeglasses distributor we talked with today confirmed they have never in the last eight years had anyone ask for eyeglasses like Dick Cheney's.
