Robert's High School Picks

September 11, 2008

I know the season is already two weeks old but the preseason previews took longer than expected.  But I am back and ready to offer my insight (how large or small depends on your opinion) on south Georgia high school football.   It should be a great season with several teams capable of winning state titles.

Early Co. at Dougherty -  The Bobcats showed their youth with a road loss to a very good Class A team in Miller County.   Dougherty is one miracle from being 2-0 and the Trojans have played better than they looked in the preseason.... Dougherty 20-19

Americus-Sumter at Hardaway -  The region opener for both teams and I think the Panthers will not need a miracle to beat my alma mater... Americus-Sumter 27-14

Albany at Kendrick -  The Indians take their 23 game losing streak to Columbus to face a Kendrick team that has lost its first two games by a score of 83-6.  The streak ends tonight.. Albany 26-22

Randolph-Southern at Bethesda - The Patriots hung tough with Southwest Georgia before the Warriors flexed their muscles in the second half.  Bethesda is 1-1 with a win over Loganville Christian.   I am going with the Patriots  Randolph-Southern 19-13

Mitchell Co. at Westover -   It may not have been pretty to watch but Westover is 2-0.  Mitchell County is improved under their committee of head coaches but not enough for the Patriots.  Should be a great game..Westover 34-33

Monroe at Glynn Academy -  Tornadoes are 2-0 but their strength of schedule can be questioned.   Also to be questioned is how good the Red Terrors are after a win over AAAAA Bradwell Institute and a loss to AA McIntosh County Academy.  I am going with SWGA..Monroe 29-27

Ware Co. at Lowndes -  The Vikings showed their muscle with a dominating performance against Peachtree Ridge.  Ware County, the preseason number one in AAAA, looks like they got it together in the second half against Burke County last week.  Not good enough against the mighty Vikings..Lowndes  22-15

Jonesboro at Valdosta - The Cats non region tuneup continues against the Cardinal from Jonesboro who have had two weeks to get ready for this one... Valdosta 42-13

Shaw at Coffee-  Trojans are 2-0 and that includes a shutout at Ware County.  Raiders are a dangerous 0-2 team because their losses by one point each to very good teams in Central-Phenix City and Sandy Creek.    It will be close but the road trip is too much for Shaw...Coffee 10-7

Wayne Co. at Colquitt Co. - Packers got a big win last week against Thomasville and should have no problem going to 3-0... Colquitt County 33-20

Cook at Tift Co. -  No one wants to be in the Hornets shoes going to play a Tift County team that got their tail whipped last week by Brooks County... Tift County 34-12

Lee Co. at Bainbridge -  The Trojans are 0-2 but a break here or there they could be 2-0.  There is no break opening 1-AAAA play against the Bearcats...Bainbridge 44-22

Thomasville at Cairo-   The Bulldogs may be the best 0-3 team in the state because the Syrupmakers look like a team focused on winning state championship last week against Thomas County Central.  I know this is a rivalry game but Tom Fallaw always has his team ready to play no matter who the opponent is.... Cairo 24-14

Turner Co. at Crisp Co. -   The Cougars are off to a great start thanks to their defense.  Turner County will spread the Cougar D Friday but I don't think they can score enough points...
Crisp County   23-22

Fitzgerald at Worth Co. - The game of the week between two unbeaten teams who both have state title aspirations.   This should be a defensive battle but I think the Hurricanes will make the play to win... Fitzgerad  13-8

Atkinson Co. at Calhoun Co. -  Cougars have struggled on the road but the home opener is not going to be any better... Atkinson Co. 27-21

Lanier Co. at Seminole Co. -  The Bulldogs gambled and lost last week on a two point conversion at Berrien while the Indians are young.  Lanier County 19-16

Pelham at Miller Co. -  The Pirates open region play against a Hornet team that has lost 30 straight games.  I am afraid the streak grows to 31.... Miller County 41-6

Berrien at Irwin Co. -   The Rebels head north of Ocilla to face an Irwin County team looking for their first win of the season... Irwin County 18-15

Wilkinson Co. at Wilcox Co. -  There is no rebuilding in Rochelle this year for Mark Ledford just reloading...Wilcox Co.  36-24

Deerfield-Windsor at Stratford - The Knights tough start to the season sees a third straight game against the big three in Macon.   Knights coach Allen Lowe is right in his team has a good defense...Deerfield-Winsdor 19-7

Brookwood at Tiftarea -  A very intriguing matchup between a Panther team ranked in the AA top five and a Warrior team that could be in the AAA state championship game..
Brookwood 35-30

Southland at Pinewood Christian -  The Raiders are back on the road for perhaps the toughest place in the GISA to win a game in Bellville.  Pinewood Christian 28-25

Southwest Georgia at Terrell Academy-  Eagles coach Bill Murdock says the Warriors lines are a as big as Georgia.  But Terrell QB Keaton Icard has just as many moves as Knowshon Moreno.
Terrell Academy in a thriller....34-33

Robert Toombs at Valwood - Valiants celebrate homecoming with a win over the Crusaders...Valwood 13-12

Strong Rock at Sherwood Christian - Eagles recover from the whipping at Brookwood...Sherwood Christian 37-33

RP Monroe at Westwood - Wildcats have faced some tough competition in their first two games which should come in handy this week...Westwood 26-15
