ALBANY, GA (WALB) - An Albany Police Officer had to shoot a part- pit bull dog that attacked him Thursday night.

Lieutenant Greg Elder was bitten twice by the dog before he shot him. The dog survived and Elder was at work Friday.

The shooting happened around 6:00PM Thursday at a house on Ridgeway Drive. Elder was trying to help a friend catch the lab-pit bull mix, when the dog attacked him and bit him on the ankle and the back.

Elder, who's on the SWAT Team, shot the dog once with his 9-millimeter pistol. The dog is expected to recover from his wound.

Policy calls for an investigation by the Office of Professional Standards.
