THOMASVILLE, GA (WALB) - Some kids in Decatur County will get backpacks full of food Friday. The Hunger Prevention Coalition kicked off their Backpack program in May. Friday, volunteers will distribute the backpacks to schools all over the County.

68 percent of the school system's students are on a reduced or free lunch program. Teachers say many children come to school hungry, and that hurts their school performance.

Hunger Prevention volunteers say they'll help 225 students this year.

"Each Friday the children that have qualified for the program, and qualified you know is kind of liberal, they receive a backpack. They take it home with food for the weekend, bring their backpack back on Monday, and it is replaced for Friday for every week of the school year," says Dana Bryant with the Hunger Prevention program.

The program gets some help from the Food Bank of Southwest Georgia, but they need more support. If you want to help contact Dana Bryant at 229-248-2221.
