ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Someone stole eight vehicles from an Albany auction yard Tuesday night. They broke into an office where the keys were kept at Liberty Auto Auction on U.S. 19 South, then drove out through a fence.
Wednesday afternoon, a Mitsubishi was found abandoned in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 300 block of Mercer Avenue. It was recovered because an alert citizen called police.
Officers say the thieves apparently took the stolen vehicles for joy rides and then abandoned them . Just a few blocks away, another one was found. A van was found in the back yard of an abandoned house in the 800 block of Cotton Avenue.
Dougherty County Police dusted both vehicles for fingerprints. Police hope others will call if they spot vehicles that appear to have been abandoned. Capt. Jimmy Sexton said, "That's what we count on. There's not very many of us. There's a lot of citizens out there and if they keep their eyes open, we can keep people who've done this where they need to be."
There are still four vehicles out there somewhere and police hope you'll be on the lookout for them. There's a Maroon 2005 Suzuki Forenza; black 2001 BMW 740 i; green 2007 Ford Taurus; and a white 1994 Mercury Sable.
