A south Georgia school system is commended for its comprehensive safety plan. GEMA awarded Valdosta city schools the certificate of safety approval at their regular school board meeting last night.

Valdosta is the first of 39 southwest Georgia school districts to receive the approval.

"We believe our schools are properly prepared for any kind of disaster that could possibly happen," said Janeen Josey, Valdosta School Public Information.

Valdosta schools started their safety plan in 1998 - a year before the state mandated public school systems to do so. [
