ALBANY, GA (WALB) -  The attempt comes after Sherwood premiered its third movie "Fireproof" in Atlanta Friday night. But investigators say it is to early to say whether the events are connected.

Police tape surround a huge hole at the glass entrance of Sherwood Baptist Church's childcare center. Albany police officers were called to the scene just before nine Saturday morning after a custodian worker discovered the broken glass.

"Laying just inside of the door was a primitive explosive device commonly referred to as a molotov cocktail filled with an unknown substance. And the foyer area smelled of gasoline," said Albany Police Lieutenant, Joe Moored.

Police immediately evacuated the building and called Albany fire department arson investigators. "The extent of the damages at this time appears to be just broken glass. There was a wick on the device that was partially burnt, but it did not ignite the device," said Moored.

"This one did not break. And we are going to process it for fingerprints," said Albany Fire Investigator, Sam Harris. They are also looking at surveillance video from that night. "The church is equipped with a state of the art video surveillance system. And the recording is being examined at this time," said Moored.

Investigators still don't have a motive. "It's too early to speculate. We have to take a look at all the evidence. The situation needs to be further investigated by the arson team," said Moored.

"I think it's horrible that someone would do that to a church. And when someone said a molotov cocktail that sounded pretty serious. That's is not someone spray painting something or throwing toilet paper on a lawn. It is serious," said church member, Glen Hamby.

Despite the severity, Hamby said this will not stop him from attending or participating in Sherwood Baptist Church activities or events. Sherwood Baptist Church will hold its regularly scheduled events this weekend.
