ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A special election will be held to determine who will succeed Art Searles on the Dougherty County Commission. Searles died of a heart attack Tuesday.

The local Democratic party said they planned to appoint someone today to take his spot on the November ballot.

However, the Board of Elections determined today that a Special Democratic Primary will be held November 4th, and, assuming no one is a write-in candidate, the winner of that primary will assume the commission seat.

Contractor Harry James ran against Searles last month and says he's still interested in the job. He said, "Mr. Searles was a good person. I considered him to be a giant in the community. He was a business owner like myself and he owned one of the heartbeats of Albany."

Qualifying for the special election opens Monday August 25th closes at noon August 27th.
