Albany, Ga - The South Georgia Waves won their third straight with a 4-3 win over the Charleston, WV Alley Cats in a South Atlantic League game at Paul Eames Park Tuesday night.
South Georgia (21-21/61-50) outlasted the Alley Cats (21-23/46-68) with three double plays and a pair of brilliant defensive plays including a game-ending diving catch by left fielder Julio Pacheco.
Jose R. (Jumbo) Diaz (1-0) earned his first win for the Waves with five innings of work, scattering six hits and walking four while allowing three earned runs.
Ross Hawley and Franquelis Osoria combined to retire the final seven Charleston hitters in order and Osoria earned his first save with two shutout innings following two scoreless innings in relief by Hawley.
The Waves claimed a 2-0 lead with a run in each the second and third innings off a pair of groundouts.
The Alley Cats answered with a three-run fourth inning, scoring twice on RBI base hits by Tim Whittaker and Michael Jova before taking a 3-2 lead on a sacrifice fly by Lee Delfino.
Scott Gillitzer had one of his three hits on the night in a two-run fifth. Thomari Story-Harden sac fly to deep left field plated Franklin Gutierrez to put the Waves ahead 4-3 and provide the final margin.
The win gave the Waves their first three-game winning streak since they beat Columbus in back-to-back games and took the opening game at Charleston, SC June 22-24.
South Georgia has won five of its last six games. Mike Keirstead (1-4) and Tracy Thorpe (5-6) are slated to start the opening game of Wednesday's doubleheader that is scheduled to begin at 6:05 p.m. at Paul Eames Sports Complex.
