Lowndes begins new era

August 5, 2002

When Randy McPherson arrived at Lowndes, he found alot of players, great facilities and community support for the Viking football program.

The one thing he didn't find among those players was alot of returning starters as the Vikings graduated their quarterback, running back and two receivers.

That may help as McPherson begins to put his handprint on the Lowndes Viking program.

Coach Randy McPherson said. "I realize we did lose alot of people but heck i'm new here. But, we are just basically starting from scratch trying to put a team together."

Still trying to learn the names of his players, several have already caught McPherson's eye for their hustle and leadership like fullback Demetrius Harvey.

Demetrius Harvey said. "It is a new offense or whatever but all it does is just takes time and we are getting better at it everyday."

The big question for the Vikings his finding a successor to three year starting quarterback Barrett Wilkes.

Early in camp, it is a three way battle between Brandon Ponder, Brian Sirmans and Jake Walker for the starting job in McPherson's multiple wing-t attack.

McPherson though believes his quarterback will be adequately protected with a line led by Chris Adams and Justin Smith.

On defense, virtually the entire secondary returns along with John Barwick on the defensive line.

Coach McPherson said. "There is no telling what kind of football team we can become. My job is to make this team the best they can be."

Randy McPherson's first game at Lowndes is at home on August 30th against Westside High of Macon.
