Valdosta looks to reload in 2008

Valdosta - After a bumpy first season at Valdosta High, head coach Rick Tomberlin got the Wildcats back on track last season.

Valdosta's nine wins in 2007 was the most since 2003 when the Cats last won the region title and played in the state championship game.

The challenge for Tomberlin and his coaching staff is they lost eight starters on defense.

Fortunately, linebacker Michael Gilliard, who will sign with Georgia in February, is one of three starters returning.

Tennessee commitment Antonio Foster leads what his expected to be a very good offensive line for Valdosta and the receiving corps also returns.

Kyle Rowe is leading a battle of five players in line to start at quarterback and the Cats expect to have plenty of depth in the backfield at running back.

Rick Tomberlin said "Our guys have worked real hard but we have got a long way to go. I am optimistic. I dont' think it is rebuilding. I just think we have to load up and go."

Valdosta High fans can see how the reloading is going when the Cats scrimmage Worth County Friday night at Cleveland Field.

Valdosta High opens the season at home on August 29th against Jenkins High.
