VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - In Lowndes County, a hotly contested sheriff's race is bringing out a lot of voters.

Sheriff's Captain JD Yeager is battling former state trooper Chris Prine in a Democratic runoff.

Election officials say more than 2000 voters cast their ballots early last week and they expect to far exceed the statewide average turnout.

"We beat the standard 3.5% turnout in advanced voting before the polls ever opened so the more the better. Come on out and vote. The lines aren't very long but we've had steady turnout," says Election Supervisor Deb Cox.

The polls are open until 7:00 PM Tuesday.

Election results in Lowndes County will be displayed at the Board of Elections office on Oak Street.
