VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -  A suspected cold-blooded killer is off the streets. The man investigators say gunned down a Lake Park store clerk Wednesday night was captured in Florida Thursday night.

Lowndes County investigators got a tip that 20-year-old Daymon Heard went to Jacksonville to stay with a girlfriend.

The homicide squad from the sheriff's office there staked out the home and arrested Heard just after 6:30 PM on Thursday.

He's charged with murder, burglary, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

He's accused of gunning down 48-year-old Jay Patel at the Triangle Foods in Lake Park.

Investigators say Patel offered no resistance.  They say Heard just walked in and shot him.

"IT's a great feeling. It's been a lot of hard hours, we've been going at it non-stop since it happened. To have him in custody and he's not hurt, no one else has gotten hurt. The victim's family is grateful he's off the street, his family is grateful he's safe.  It's the best thing that can happen after the tragedy that did happen," says Wanda Edwards of the Lowndes County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies from Lowndes County will go to Jacksonville Friday to interview Heard.

He'll have an extradition hearing over the next few days.
