ALBANY, GA (WALB) -  Nearly two dozen people in Dougherty County have reported being conned in a fake check scheme.   It's a you need to watch out for.

Investigators say the victims got checks like this one in the mail, supposedly from Marriott International. They're made out to the victims for more than $3,400. A letter says S&G Marketing Group from Troy, New York is hiring secret shoppers to buy products at various stores.

The letter instructs you to deposit the check and wire $425 back to the company. Investigators say the check and the company are both phony, but it all looks real.

"If they send out one hundred thousand and they get six thousand people to send them back $425, that's quite a profit for sending out a little mailing that cost them nothing to print up," says Dougherty Co. Sheriff's Capt. Craig Dodd.

Sheriff's Investigators warn that this con group is targeting the elderly and young adults.

They say if you a check, don't cash it or call the company phone number.

Just shred it.
