Quitman - Brooks County will have a new sheriff in January.

Brooks Deputy Mike Dewey defeated Richard Chafin in Tuesday's election.

Dewey has worked with the Sheriff's department for 19 years. He says he already has big plans for when he takes office.

"We've got a lot of burglaries going on as the economy gets worse. Crime goes up and therefore the burglaries and drug enforcement need to be addressed," Dewey says.

Dewey beat Chafin by nearly 200 votes. Chafin has been sheriff since 1987.
