McQuaig leads at Albany Junior Open

Tifton -  The Lowndes High Viking golf team is plundering the field at the sixth annual Albany Junior Open.

Three current or former Viking players are sitting atop the leaderboard after 18 of 36 holes.

Trey McQuaig shot a 70 to take the first round lead by two shots over fellow Vikings Chase Hankla and Ty Howze.

Howze is 15 but playing from the back teams where the 16-18 age division is playing which makes him eligible for the overall title.

Southland's Kathryn Fowler, who won the girls title, is just three shots the overall lead and Spenser Ferrell is in fifth with a 74.

Future Darton College golfer Roy Steinberg and Sherwood Christian's Kelly Pearce are tied for sixth with a score of 75.

Luke Bennett shot an 81 to lead the 14-15 age division.

Tyler Dallis leads the 12-13 age group with a 78 in the first round.

Wilson Joiner's 41 on the front nine leads the 9-11 age group.

Karlie Jones wins the 8 & under division with a 17 on four holes of play.

The second round is Tuesday at Stonebridge Country Club.
