ALBANY, GA (WALB) -Colquitt County gymnast Leah May is ready to begin her senior season with the Lady Packers, and is starting to attract a lot of attention from college gymnastics programs around the country.
May has been competing in the sport for 12 years, and finished second in the floor-exercises and all-around competition in the GHSA state championships last year.
She placed fourth in the vault.
May went to level 10 nationals in USA competition, and is a two-time YMCA nationals all-around champion, including this past season, when she helped lead Moultrie to a second-place finish.
It was their best finish ever.
The Colquitt County senior's success is catching the eye of college programs, as Auburn, Michigan, Iowa State, Maryland, Penn, and Yale have all expressed interest, and May says it's very exciting.
"I remember when we got our first letter from Auburn," says May, "and that was the first one that we talked to, and it was D-I, so we were all excited, and they just kept coming. It's cool to have someone want you, and it's really motivating, because you want to get the harder stuff, so you can be an asset."
YMCA gymnastics coach Bob Swadel says, "Good athletes make coaches look very good, so having somebody like Leah, and some of the others we've had, has been a real treat to work with."
The Colquitt County gymnastics team placed fifth in the GHSA state championships last season, less than three points behind first-place Newnan.
