Interstate wreck blocks traffic

CORDELE, GA - (WALB) - The north bound lanes of traffic on Interstate 75 in Crisp County, near Georgia Highway 300, were blocked for a time this morning when a tractor-trailer rig rolled on its side.

"The vehcile was driven by Mr. Kimmel," said Georgia state trooper Jaso Ellis. "He was traveling northbound on I-75 in the right lane. At the time of the crash, vehicle number one, the tractor tariler, traveled onto the east shoulder of the roadway. I beleive the driver was distracted temporarily."

40-year-old Robert Kimmel of Orlando,Florida and a passenger were hauling a load for Dollar General when Kimmel lost control of the Werner semi near mile marker 99 just after 8:00 a.m.

"He over corrected while trying to re-enter the roadway. And the tractor trailer overturned onto it's passnger side on the east shoulder," said the trooper.

Tire marks stretched for yards, evidence the tractor trailer was in trouble. But miracuously, both Kimmel and his passenger walked away without any injuries and with no other vehicles involved. Now state troopers are looking into what caused the wreck.

As to whether the driver might have been asleep, the GSP says "It was the early morning hours, that's a common cause. But right now we just know that he was distracted," Ellis said.

While the investgation continues into what caused this crash. The driver Robert Kimmel has been charged with failure to maintain lane.

Both lanes of I-75 re-opened early this afternoon
