ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

Albany Police Officers and city employees donated blood Thursday in honor of a Police Officer who was recently shot on the job. The police department hosted a blood drive at the Law Enforcement Center to honor Officer Tim Harvey.

He was shot two weeks ago while chasing a suspect.

Harvey underwent surgery and is now recovering, but Police say the incident reminded them how vital the Red Cross blood supply is. Albany Police Corporal William Dowdell said  "Definitely, after the Harvey shooting took place. But it's really a civic duty, that we should do anyway. It doesn't hurt, doesn't cost or anything, and potentially could save lives."

The American Red Cross said there is a critical need for more blood donors this summer.
