ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A crack down on the sale of alcohol to the under-aged in Lee County.

The Sheriff's Office conducted a sweep of all 25 businesses that sell alcohol and busted nine of them. Among those caught selling illegally were Winn Dixie grocery store on U.S. 19, Shugz Restaurant on Philema Road and Shooter's Billboards at Philema and Jefferson. Also cited were five convenience stores and a grocery store in Smithville.

Sheriff Harold Breeden said they conducted the sweep after getting complaints about under aged sales. Two of the stores they received complaints about were caught. He said this should serves as a warning to businesses heading into the fourth of July holiday weekend.

"I think school being out has got a lot to do with it and kids will just try. They'll go into these stores and see if they'll sell it to them, like I said we can't tolerate that in Lee County," said Lee County Sheriff Harold Breeden.

Each clerk who sold to the decoy will be charged with sale of alcoholic beverages to an underage person, a misdemeanor. The information will also be sent to the business license office.
