Valdosta - Valdosta will host a pilot program to stamp out smoking around the state.

It's called the Nicotine Replacement Therapy program.

It will be a year long program that will offer participants several different nicotine alternatives and the help smokers need to kick the habit.

Health officials say Lowndes County was chosen for the program because of it's large smoking population.

"Right now over 31% of our households in Lowndes County smoke using cigarettes and over 7% use smokeless tobacco products," says Courtney Sheeley from the South Health District.

Brunswick, Rome, Dalton and Waycross were also chosen to participate in the program.

If it's successful, it will be implement around the state.
