ALBANY, GA (WALB) - Support from Lee County Commissioners could help the Westover Extension project move forward at a faster pace.

Commissioners threw their support behind the project Tuesday night to help ease traffic congestion on Nottingham Way. The project would go from near the mall to near Wal-Mart, connecting Westover Boulevard to Ledo Road.

The Liberty Expressway would go over the new road. Transportation engineers in Albany say their chances of completing the project quickly and with help from the Department of transportation are greater with lee County's support.

"With Lee County's approval that's gives us more bargaining power to look to G-DOT to move this project forward," said David Hamilton, Dougherty County Transportation Planner.

Dougherty County will now look to have the project included in its long range transportation project list. It will still be four to seven years before the project is completed.
