VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) -  More than two dozen firefighters gathered at the Lowndes County Commission meeting Tuesday night.

They want to know why Fire Chief Jim Fielding was fired earlier this month.

They presented a petition to commissioners, asking them to reconsider their decision and to reinstate the fire chief.

They believe he was unjustly fired and that his termination will hurt the county and the department.

"We feel like he has been unjustly treated and terminated and we all stand behind him. I just don't like seeing someone wronged, especially someone that's done as much as he has with the qualifications he has," says retired firefighter Grady Blankenship.

Due to county policy, County Manager Joe Pritchard says he cannot release the reason why Fielding was fired until Friday.
