ALBANY, GA (WALB) -   Recent rain has Dougherty Public work crews increasing how often they spray for mosquitoes.

Some parts of Albany got more than two inches of rain Sunday. And while the precipitation is badly needed, the mosquitoes love it, too.

So far the mosquito population in Dougherty have been low. But because the rainfall this month has been sporadic; now is the time for mosquito larvae to hatch.

"With the amount of rain that we've gotten, we pretty much are at the point of them hatching out. So catching them as they are hatching is when we can knock them out. And that's what we are looking to do at this point," said Environmental Control Manager, Donnell Mathis.

You can play a role in preventing mosquito problems in your area by removing standing water around your home. Tires, dog bowls or flower pot trays are popular places mosquitoes lay their eggs.
