Turner Job Corps Center

Turner Job Corps Center Turner Job Corps Center

Job Corps is the nation's largest education and career training program and offers people between the ages of 16 and 24 the opportunity to learn career skills, earn their high school diploma or GED, and gain the confidence necessary to begin a successful career.  Funded by the Department of Labor, Job Corps has been training young adults for meaningful careers since 1964. Job Corps is committed to offering all students a safe, drug-free environment where they can take advantage of the resources provided.

The Turner Job Corps Center is located in Albany, Georgia.  Albany is the largest city in Dougherty County, as well as southwest Georgia.  It is approximately 60 miles north of Tallahassee, Florida and 180 miles south of Atlanta.  The Turner Center is easily accessible by air through the Albany City Municipal Airport, and by land through the Albany Greyhound Bus Station.  The center is situated on 125 beautiful acres on what was once known as the Turner Airfield.

Turner Job Corps Center has been helping youth since 1978.  We are an accredited Council on Education (COE) institution and the fourth largest of the 122 Job Corps centers nationwide.  The center is home to 830 students. Our center population comes from a variety of areas in the southeastern region of the United States including Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina and South Carolina.  Some students do come to us as advanced trade transfers from any of the 121 Job Corps Centers throughout the nation.  In addition to the 830 students located at the Turner site, we have 100 students who are concurrently enrolled at the Ft. Stewart Youth Challenge Academy in Hinesville, GA, making our total population 930.

Our goal is to have 85% of our students from the state of Georgia.  This will allow us to produce additional program collaborations with Albany Technical College, Darton College and Albany State University, utilizing the HOPE grant for funding.  It will also assist with direct placements and follow up for our graduates.

The campus is self-contained.  It has a residential facility comprised of seven dormitories, one of which is a Residential Parent dormitory.  We have a Wellness facility, two recreational facilities, one gymnasium, a multipurpose field, outdoor basketball courts, a swimming pool and a campus store.  Physical as well as mental activity is encouraged with such sports as basketball, softball, volleyball and soccer.  Most sports have male and female teams.  In addition, the center offers fitness training, a weight room and an arts & crafts program.  Off campus recreation is scheduled regularly.

The area's labor market strongly supports the career skills training programs offered by the center. As an enhancement to the center training, students train in local health care facilities, restaurants, correctional facilities, country clubs, retailers, and in major companies such as Proctor & Gamble, Palmyra Hospital and Miller Brewing.  They also participate in community beautification projects such as the construction of sidewalks at the municipal golf course, landscaping of school grounds, city projects such as "Turtle Park", Habitat for Humanity, Downtown Albany Beautification Project and other community service projects.

The Community Relations Executive Board and participation on community-based service projects have improved the image of the Turner Job Corps program.  Students have been recognized as contributing citizens and assets to area businesses.  We have seen community service projects lead to career opportunities for our students.  Work-based Learning programs have enhanced the Center's ability to deliver real-world training with real job opportunities.  Area employers are seeking our services and request our students for Work-based Learning opportunities, which often lead to career opportunities.

Our Industry Advisory Council plays a vital role in developing new Career Skills Programs that are in demand. The committee periodically assesses our Career Skills Programs and makes recommendations to bring our curriculum and equipment up to industry standards.  We have also partnered with Albany Technical College's Economic Development Committee (EDC) to periodically review and monitor the effectiveness of each Career Skills Program we offer.  The EDC has been instrumental in expanding our partnership with Albany Technical College to offer "enhancement courses" at the college.
