ALBANY, GA (WALB) - A former candidate for Dougherty County Sheriff Friday endorsed another hopeful. Kirk Smith announced he's supporting Captain Kevin Sproul in the Sheriff's race.

Smith owns a trucking business. He ended his campaign a month ago. Smith said running against Sproul he learned that they have the same values for fighting crime and protecting the community.

"He is the man who can do the job, and I will put my life and my familiy's life behind him, and do what I have to do to help him get elected Sheriff. I know he will do the job as Sheriff of Dougherty County."

Sproul has worked at the Sheriff's Office for 26 years.

He's opposed by Albany Police officers Benita Childs and James Williams in the July Democratic Primary.
