Albany - A manhunt is underway in Albany for a man who shot an Albany Police Officer.  27-year old Patrolman Timothy Harvey was shot in the abdomen while questioning a man in the middle of the night.

Officer Harvey spotted the man in the area of 8th Avenue near North Davis Street. The man tried to get away, the officer chased him and was gunned down.

He underwent surgery and is recovering in the hospital.

This police shooting touched off a huge manhunt that includes dozens of officers, bloodhounds, and a GSP helicopter.

Police regard this shooter as extremely dangerous, by virtue of the fact that he shot a police officer.

The scene of this morning's shooting may seem quiet, but the manhunt for the suspect is still very much alive as several police agencies continue to search.

Albany Police officers continue to comb through the area where one of their own was shot.

"I heard three shots, measured shots. 1-2-3 not pop, pop, pop, on top of each other, like someone was aiming," says resident  Karla Daniels.

At three O'clock Tuesday morning, officer Timothy Harvey went after a suspicious person in dark clothing on a bike at 8th Avenue and Davis. That's where he was shot in the lower abdomen, and called for help.

"He came upon a suspicious person riding a bicycle confronted that person and at some point that suspect started to run and turned and shot at him. The subject has been described as a black male, 5'6" to 5'8 inches tall, medium build wearing dreadlocks. Last scene wearing a black shirt with a black knapsack," says Albany Police Chief James Younger.

Local and state law enforcement agencies are actively searching for that suspect.

"The search is ongoing. The perimeter has been expanded but the search continues," said the chief.

Now they are turning to you. "We have utilized all local and state law Enforcement agencies and are now looking to the public for assistance. If anyone has any information about someone who matches the suspects description pleas call the tips hotline," Younger said.

And those who live in the area are startled that a potential cop killer is still on the loose.

"Just going to be more watchful and more vigilant," said Daniels. "It is tragic and I don't think people give officers the respect they are due."

Officer Timothy Harvey is currently in the ICU in is listed in fair condition after undergoing surgery at Phoebe Putney Memorial this morning.

If you have any information call crime stoppers at 229-436-TIPS.
