Tifton--A Tifton police officer was nearly run over and the suspect was shot during a chase Friday night.

An officer was trying to stop 21-year-old Devin Barrett on 9th Street and Woodlong for loud music, but Barrett refused to stop his Chevrolet Impala.

He got onto Highway 82 heading west trying to escape.

He then turned north on Central Avenue, and hit an officer at that corner.

That's when Officer John Brannen shot at the car,  hitting Barret in the arm.

"He pulled up to an intersection and thought that the driver of the Impala was going to stop, but he did not and actually ended up hitting the officer, so at the time the officers life he felt was in danger so he fired," said Det. Shane Benefield, Tifton Police Department.

That bullet however didn't stop Barrett, He then went east on 82 until he crashed into another car stopped at a red light.

The driver in that car was not injured.

Barrett faces aggravated assault charges and eight traffic violations including DUI.

Officer Brannen is now on administrative leave while the GBI investigates.
